Sleepwalking into a social care crisis
What is the sleep-ins crisis facing the social care sector?
There is a crisis in the care sector that could leave vulnerable people at risk. Recent changes to guidance on the National Living Wage and ‘sleep-in’ shifts means there is a £400 million bill looming over an already chronically underfunded sector. This poses a threat to vital support for thousands of disabled people.
Despite this issue being caused by a change in Government guidance, HMRC is ready to penalise organisations with fines and to force them to make back payments of up to six years. Our workers do a critical job and deserve to be paid fairly, but this action by Government will bankrupt the sector.
