Cyber Aware Issue: Russian cyber activity in and around Ukraine
Russian cyber activity in Ukraine may feel very far away, but all UK organisations have been encouraged to take action in response to malicious cyber incidents, and ensure they are taking cyber safeguards. Care providers are encouraged to check their cyber security arrangements and their practices in the light of this recent activity.
The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) is keeping track of cyber developments. They have separately highlighted an increased global threat of ransomware, and recently updated their guidance on heightened threat.
Digital Social Care has issued a notice and given advise to all care providers. Care providers should: use they Data Security and Protection Toolkit to ensure care services are taking steps to increase their cyber resilience; contact IT leads and suppliers; and report any cyber security incidents to the NCSC.

A new partnership between NHSX and Digital Social Care has been formed to support the universal adoption of Digital Social Care Records.

Guidance and templates for faster ordering of medications and access to information in the resident’s GP record
A faster and safer way to order medications and access information in the GP record for care home residents is now available. It provides real time information for the right resident at the right time.
Ordering your residents’ medications and accessing information in the GP record via proxy access to their GP online services account can save you, the pharmacy and GP practice time. It creates an audit trail and helps to make the dispensing of individual medicines easier whilst resulting in reduction in medication waste too.
To help, the LGA and NHS have published a step-by-step guide for care homes, GP practices and pharmacies to support ordering medication by proxy, and Access to Information in the GP record guide to support implementation. The guidance, linked to TPP and EMIS GP practice systems, also covers the necessary security and governance requirements.
In addition, all the resources for GP proxy national and regional pages can be found here.

Look out for scam emails
While coronavirus has led to big changes in the way that we live and work, cyber criminals have seen this as an opportunity. In emails and on the phone, they may claim to have a ‘cure’ for the virus or offer financial rewards. Like many scams, these criminals are preying on real-world concerns to try and trick you into interacting. They may also mimic real NHS and government messages. Digital Social Care have heard reports from care providers that they are getting phishing emails and calls from criminals pretending to be contacting them about the Covid-19 vaccine. Digital Social Care has published a useful article on this subject. The National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) has also provided advice to help you identify phishing attacks and what to do if you are a victim of crime.

Sharing Care Records via Email
Email is a useful tool for communicating and is excellent for sharing information day to day. But we should be careful about using it to share sensitive information. It can be relatively easy for unwanted people to intercept and access the emails that we send, even when we use strong passwords.
