To celebrate Care Home Open Week 2022, members of the Care England policy team visited Bupa’s Middlesex Manor Care Home in Wembley on June 27. During the visit, we met with staff and residents and developed a great appreciation for the high-quality services carers provide.

Middlesex Manor is a residential and nursing home, providing supportive care for those who require dementia care, recovery, respite, day care, Parkinson’s, palliative, and convalescence care. We received a friendly reception from General Manager, Louis Capadosa, and members of the senior leadership team, who provided us a guided tour around the care home and its grounds. We saw the impressive facilities from the kitchen to their activity rooms, where residents socialise and play games with each other, relatives and staff. We were also shown their tree of remembrance, that staff had made for their residents who had passed on, as well as their memorial garden, that was open to relatives, and was there to remember those lost during the COVID pandemic.

It was great to visit the home to develop an understanding of the scope of the services that Bupa offered their residents. Whilst walking through, the care home was buzzing with activity as carers carried out their duties and engaged residents with interactive activities such as gentle gardening. The positive relationship the carers have with their residents was on display as we were able to see carers provide first-class care to their residents and offer companionship to them during their care journey.

Following our tour of the facilities, we had a discussion with members of their senior leadership team to discuss the state of the adult social care sector, accompanied by a delicious lunch prepared by the care homes talented catering staff. It was wonderful to hear of the events that have been held such as the staff sports day to build up spirits after the pandemic, the use of social media to connect with the community, and annual awards ceremonies which incentivise staff to celebrate their hard work. We also discussed pressing issues affecting the care sector, such as the difficulties in procuring agency nurses, relationships with social workers, staff recruitment and retention, mental health, and wellbeing. Through these discussions we were impressed to learn of the high rate of staff engagement for internal Bupa surveys to ensure that senior leadership are addressing the concerns of frontline staff. It was particularly insightful to discuss the issues with individuals who experienced the challenges of the Covid pandemic in care homes whilst working on the front-line and to address their feedback by taking forward issues on funding and the workforce.

Care England would like to thank all the staff and residents at Middlesex Manor care home staff for their wonderful hospitality, and Bupa for providing us with a wonderful tour of their facilities and for the three plants we were kindly gifted as we were finishing our visit.
