Home / Resources & Guidance / Post Pulse Series: The Perception of a Career in Care: Why the Narrative Must Change

Our fifth Post-Pulse article looks at the perception of a career in care within the adult social care sector.

Adult social care is vital to the wellbeing of millions and contributes significantly to the UK economy, yet it continues to be viewed as low-skilled and low-status. This damaging perception, driven by systemic underfunding, poor media portrayal, and lack of recognition, undermines recruitment, limits progression, and leads to high turnover across the sector. Despite requiring complex skills, emotional intelligence, and professional dedication, care work is still undervalued in comparison to roles in health and education.

Transforming this narrative is essential to securing the future of care. To do so, the sector needs fair pay, visible career progression, stronger public recognition, and policy changes that reflect the true worth of its workforce. This is not just about improving image, it’s a strategic necessity to build a care workforce that is resilient, motivated, and ready to meet the demands of a growing, ageing population.
