Sleep is a fundamental component of health, yet its significance is often underestimated in residential care settings. This webinar ‘The Sleep Gap: The Overlooked Factor Costing Lives, Time, and Trust in Care’ delved into the pivotal role sleep plays in resident well-being and examined the consequences of neglecting this essential need.

Drawing on data from care homes utilising residents monitoring technology, we explored how inadequate sleep contributes to increased falls, infections, agitation, and higher medication usage. Conversely, we highlighted how improved sleep quality led to enhanced mood, better engagement in daily activities, and extended lengths of stay in care facilities.

Key takeaways:

  • Understood the direct correlation between sleep quality and resident health outcomes.
  • Learnt how to identify and address environmental and behavioural factors disrupting sleep.
  • Discovered strategies for implementing effective sleep monitoring and improvement plans.
  • Gained insights into the broader impacts of sleep on nutrition, cognitive function, and overall quality of life.
