It is estimated that around 130,000 people aged 65 or over in the UK are currently suffering from financial abuse. A report commissioned by Comic Relief and the Department of Health concluded that this is a conservative estimate, as victims may be unwilling to report abuse by a family member or friend due to embarrassment or fear of causing a rift.

So, what is financial abuse?

While the term can refer to large-scale theft or fraud, it also includes “lower-level” theft—a few pounds here and there, items added to a shopping basket, or change not handed over. These small amounts can quickly escalate and take many forms, including:

  • Being pressured to lend money to relatives or friends.
  • Being charged excessive amounts for a service.
  • Someone frequently requests small amounts of money without good reason.
  • Family members or friends adding their own items to the shopping basket or keeping the change.
  • Being pressured to sign over property.
  • Taking money, cashing a cheque, or using a credit or debit card without permission.
  • Being pressured into changing a will.
  • Someone else taking charge of a pension or benefits and not handing over all the money.

Whatever form it takes, financial abuse is a serious issue. Cleva offers a safe, simple, and secure solution to prevent it.
