The Big Conversation on Care: make your voice count before 23 September

Baroness Casey’s commission is progressing at pace, and the Commission has launched its “Big Conversation” to gather views from the public on their expectations of the care system.

This Big Conversation has asked, “When we are old or disabled, or have a serious illness, who should support us and how?”

The public have submitted over 7,700 short statements to the Big Conversation, which has now entered its second phase, meaning that it’s now closed to new submissions, but you can still vote on the proposals until the 23rd of September.

We’re not taking a view on how people should vote on proposals, although we are encouraging our circles, from staff to people who draw on care and their families, all of whom have first-hand experience of the social care system, to bring their views into the exercise.

It may help to view the public’s proposals through the following lenses:

• What would make the care workforce properly valued and funded, and what should the roles of families and unpaid carers be?
• What would give independence and choice to those who draw on care and support, with a wide range of preventative care provision available?
• What would reflect the needs of both older and working-aged adults?
• What would make care providers and commissioning more sustainable?
• How do we ensure integration does not simply medicalise social care?

The deadline for voting is fast approaching. Please respond before the 23rd of September and encourage colleagues, staff, people within your services and families to participate independently. There is also an easy-read version of the voting site available.
