Home / Resources & Guidance / Unmasking Financial Predators in the Workplace

When you think of an illegal money lender, perhaps you imagine a shady figure in a dark alley or a faceless contact on a phone screen. But the reality is often much closer to home. Your neighbour, your work colleague, or even a trusted friend could unknowingly be involved. Shockingly, over one million people in England are currently indebted to illegal money lenders, with two-thirds of them believing they were borrowing from a friend. Loan sharks target those most vulnerable—people facing financial strain with no other options.

In this episode of their series, Cath and Anna, frontline specialists from the England Illegal Money Lending Team, delve into who these predators really are and explore the efforts to stop them. The organisation work tirelessly to investigate and prosecute loan sharks across the UK. Their team is made up of experts with legal and financial backgrounds, all dedicated to tackling this pervasive issue.

As a follow-up to our Inclusion at the Crossroads report, we are excited to share the latest episode, “The Loan Shark Next Desk,” which focuses on the presence of loan sharks in the workplace—an issue particularly relevant to the care sector.
