Care providers invest significant time and money in training, but a completed course or high test score does not necessarily show that a member of staff can apply learning safely and confidently in practice. Managers need practical ways to assess competence between mandatory training cycles, identify gaps early and support staff without turning supervision into another tick-box exercise.
This webinar will explore how reflective supervision, observation and constructive feedback can be used together to strengthen everyday practice. Lucy Corner and Charlie Light will share practical approaches that managers can use to move from evidence of attendance to evidence of competence. The session will consider how to observe practice fairly, record what has been assessed, respond when confidence and competence do not match, and agree focused development actions with staff.
Participants will leave with practical ideas for:
• Distinguishing training completion from demonstrated competence.
• Observing and evidencing competence between formal training cycles.
• Using reflective supervision to recognise strengths and identify support needs.
• Giving feedback that leads to clear and proportionate development actions.
• Creating a stronger link between learning, accountability and the quality of care people experience.
The session is intended for care-home managers, nominated individuals, operational leaders, quality teams and providers who want a proportionate and useful approach to competence assessment.
