For a care provider, losing a registered manager can trigger a period of crisis. In the rush to maintain stability, leadership teams frequently hire interim managers or consultants without a rigorous vetting process.

The risk is significant: hiring the “wrong fit” can lead to further regulatory decline. Boards and owners need a “layer of assurance” when commissioning external advice. Here The Care Consultant Accreditation Framework (C-CAF) share practical strategies for senior leaders to strengthen oversight and ensure every consultant engaged meets a national benchmark of legal, practical, and ethical competence.

Essential questions when considering hiring an interim manager:

  • Does the consultant have the legal rights i.e. Right to work in the UK?
  • Is there a DBS check on the update service?
  • Is the consultant insured and hold the requisite professional indemnity to carry out the scope of work?
  • Does the consultant have the relevant background and experience needed?
  • Are references/testimonials available on request?
  • What evidence is available that the consultant has the skills required for this role?
  • How can you raise a complaint if you are not satisfied as to their work?

C-CAF ask precisely the questions during registration and accreditation process to ensure that consultancy services and independent consultants meet all of the ethical, legal, professional, and practical standards needed to provide the services they offer.
