When a care service is under pressure, the temptation to hire the first available consultant can be high. However, engaging external support is a significant procurement decision that carries its own set of regulatory and safety risks. To protect services, staff, and residents, there are five non-negotiables every provider should verify before appointing a consultancy service or an independent care consultant.
1. Enhanced DBS & safeguarding
A consultant often has unfettered access to services, sensitive data, and vulnerable residents. Care providers must ensure they hold a valid, recently issued Enhanced DBS certificate. Providers should verify the certificate through the DBS Update Service.
2. Professional indemnity insurance
If a consultant provides advice that leads to a regulatory breach or a safety incident, who carries the liability? A professional consultant must hold comprehensive Professional Indemnity insurance to protect both parties if things go wrong.
3. Right to work & legal status
Just as an employer would with a permanent employee, providers have a duty to ensure any consultancy or independent contractor has the legal right to work in the UK. This is a foundational part of a providers own compliance and “Well-Led” evidence.
4. Verified skills & specialisms
General experience is good, but is it relevant to the specific needs being commissioned? Whether it’s digital transformation, infection prevention control, or clinical governance for example, seek evidence of specific training and a track record in that niche.
5. Testimonials & peer accountability
References should be more than just a phone number. Look for a transparent history of work and honest feedback from previous providers and contracts.
Why C-CAF is the shortcut to safety
This checklist can be time-consuming for a busy manager. The Care Consultant Accreditation Framework (C-CAF) was designed to do the heavy lifting for care providers. C-CAF rigorously assess personal information, Right to Work, insurance, and Enhanced DBS status before any consultant is accredited.
