Dear colleague,
We wanted to bring to your attention an important development that may impact your care home operations.
What’s Changed?
The Environment Agency (EA) has introduced new hourly fees for businesses that fail to comply with the Simpler Recycling regulations. This means that non-compliance could result in significant additional costs for your facility, as the EA will charge for the time spent investigating and addressing compliance issues.
You can read more about this development here: Environment Agency charge proposals for simpler recycling: consultation response
Why this may impact care homes
With the Simpler Recycling requirements now in effect, care homes must ensure they are correctly segregating waste streams including:
- Dry recyclables (paper, card, plastic, metal, glass)
- Food waste
- General waste
Failure to demonstrate compliance during an EA audit could lead to costly hourly charges, in addition to potential enforcement action.
Action required
Understanding the complexities of waste compliance in care settings can be a challenge. To be confident that the requirements are met, care providers need to either seek third party support or complete:
✓ A compliance audit to assess current waste management practices
✓ Implement compliant waste segregation systems tailored to the facility
✓ Provide staff training to ensure everyone understands the requirements
✓ Supply appropriate containers and signage for different waste streams
Join the Care England waste excellence webinar to discuss:
The event on the 10th March, will help care providers to get ahead of the regulations and avoid unnecessary costs, and will cover compliance, waste excellence, carbon saving, quality improvement and financial savings, to help providers learn how they can protect care services from compliance risks and unnecessary costs as opposed to waiting for an EA inspection to discover compliance gaps.
