Orbital.net Digital Switchover

Recent headlines involving a major UK telecoms provider receiving a multi-million-pound fine after it disconnected telecare customers during its programme to migrate customers to digital landlines, have put the spotlight firmly on the nation’s ageing communications infrastructure.

While the story itself focused on service failures and the failure to protect vulnerable telecare customers, it serves as a timely reminder of a much wider issue facing organisations of all sizes: the impending Digital Switchover and safeguards to help avoid any similar occurrences.

If connectivity challenges can impact even the largest, most well-resourced providers, it raises an important question for care providers across the UK. Are your systems ready for a future without analogue lines?

By January 2027, traditional analogue and ISDN lines will be switched off permanently. This change is happening nationwide and will affect any service that still relies on copper-based telephone infrastructure. For care homes, supported living environments and healthcare facilities, the implications may be significant.

Many care providers and homes are surprised to learn just how many critical systems still depend on analogue lines. These often include fixed-line telephones, emergency call bells, lift alarm systems, fire and security alarms, door entry systems, nurse call systems and even some CCTV and monitoring solutions. In some cases, these services have been in place for years and continue to function quietly in the background, meaning their reliance on analogue connectivity can easily be overlooked and not planned for.

The risk is clear. When analogue lines are switched off, any system that has not been upgraded or migrated could fail without warning. In a care environment, this is not just inconvenient; it could directly impact resident safety, staff response times and regulatory compliance.

Orbital.net Digital SwitchoverBeyond safety concerns, there are also operational and reputational risks. Loss of phone services can disrupt communication with families, GPs and emergency services. Lift alarms that fail to connect could leave residents stranded. Call bell systems that stop working could result in delayed care and safeguarding issues. These are scenarios no provider wants to face, particularly in an already highly regulated sector.

With the switchover now little more than a year away, planning and preparation now are essential. The first step for any care provider should be a full audit of their current systems to identify which services rely on analogue lines. This includes not only obvious telephony services, but also less visible connections such as alarms, lifts and third-party monitoring equipment supplied by external vendors.

Once these dependencies are understood, providers can begin planning appropriate alternatives. This may include migrating to VoIP telephony, implementing resilient fibre or wireless connectivity, and ensuring critical systems have backup and failover options in place. Importantly, any upgrades should be designed with resilience, scalability and compliance in mind, not simply as a last-minute replacement.

The Digital Switchover is happening now, and providers need to start planning well in advance of Jan 2027. Leaving preparation until the final months increases the risk of rushed decisions, higher costs and potential service disruption. By acting early, care providers can take control of the process, spread investment over time and ensure continuity of care throughout the transition.

If recent events have shown us anything, it’s that no organisation is 100% immune to connectivity challenges. The difference lies in how well prepared you are. For care providers, planning for the digital switchover today is not just a technical exercise; it’s a vital step in protecting residents, staff and services tomorrow.
